By default the mailbox will get created for the user account which is used to install the Exchange server. In our case I used to install default Admin account which got the mailbox in the database of Exchange 2003.
Now let’s see how to create a user account and mailbox in Exchange server 2003
In the Exchange server go to the following location and click Active Directory Users and Computers
Right click the OU where you want to create the user. Here I am creating in the default OU called Users. Under the New menu click on Users
The pop up window will appear. Fill those details and click next
Enter the password. If you want the user to change his/her password then select the option 1. Here I am using the 3rd option. Click next
The summary page will appear. Make sure it meets your requirement and click Finish.
After creating the user account now we need to create a mailbox for that account. Go to ADUC (Active Directory Users and Computer) and right click the user account and click Exchange Tasks
The welcome page will appear. Check the option “Do not show this welcome page again” and click next
Select the option “Create Mailbox” and click next
Here if you have multiple servers select the appropriate Exchange server and select the appropriate Mailbox Store (Database). In this article I am using the default option since we have installed only one Exchange server with one database so far. Click next.
Success message will appear. If there is any failures please check the option “View detailed report when this wizard closes” and see the logs.
But even after creating the mailbox it will not appear in the ESM. The reason is either the user account should be logged in to OWA/Outlook or it should have one item in its mailbox.
So I have sent an email from my admin account to user1. And I am logging to user1 OWA using the following address in the Exchange server
It will prompt for user account and password. So you need to enter the credentials of the user1 account
Now I am able to see the message from admin.
After that if I refresh the ESM now I am able to see the mailbox in the ESM with the item count.
Congratulations!! You have created and logged into the user mailbox successfully.
Hope you have learned something new today. If you have any queries feel free to contact me.
